Spirited Away was released in 2001 and it is an animated fantasy adventure film. The movie’s premise is about a family who stumbles upon what they believe is an abandoned amusement park, however when the girl’s parents turn into pigs, she realizes this is anything but a normal amusement park. The girl finds out this park is actually a resort for supernatural beings who are exhausted from their time on the earthly realm. In order to free her parents and herself, she must work there. This film is great for a wide range of fantasy loving demographics.
- K-Pop Demon Hunters
This viral Sony kids movie has taken the internet by storm, with songs from the movie like ‘Golden’ and ‘Soda Pop’ topping billboard charts and breaking records, even going platinum. This movie, about a K-pop group called ‘HUNTR/X’ trying to protect the world from demons and a demon boyband named ‘The Saja Boys’ while struggling with their own secrets and being true to themselves, is good for many ages, with great animation, an easy to follow storyline with billboard breaking songs.
- Shrek
Shrek was released in 2001 and has since become a huge children’s movie, grossing around 492 million US dollars worldwide. This film’s protagonist is a green ogre who prefers to be alone, named Shrek. The story starts when a bunch of fairytale characters show up at Shrek’s swamp, exiled by Lord Farquaad. To protect his home from the characters, and get the characters back home, he agrees to Lord Farquaad’s conditions, to retrieve Princess Fiona from a castle with a dragon to be Lord Farquaad’s bride. This movie is entertaining and hilarious for so many ages.
- The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book is a Disney movie based on a book by Rudyard Kipling. This movie features a boy named Mowgli, an abandoned child raised by wolves. Mowgli’s peaceful life is then threatened by the return of a man-eating tiger to the forest. To ensure his safety, Mowgli must leave the forest and return to civilization, however he is not alone and is aided by numerous creatures on his journey. This film is an animated comedy packed with action and drama, and is entertaining for many generations.
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
The Harry Potter series is a fan favourite worldwide, with the books still selling large amounts of copies across the globe despite the last book being published 18 years ago. In this movie, you get to meet all the characters, and see it live action, not just your imagination. The movie starts with Harry at his aunt and uncle’s house, showing his life with them, before a half – giant named Hagrid tells Harry he is a wizard. Harry is invited to a wizarding school, called Hogwarts, which he attends, learning magic, meeting new people and getting up to hijinks. This movie is beloved by millions along with the rest of the series and is great for many groups of people.
- The Karate Kid (2010)
This classic movie was originally released in 1984, however was remastered in 2010 with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. The Karate Kid is about a 12 year old boy named Dre Parker forced to move to China by his mother’s job. He is a stranger in an unfamiliar land, and while he knows a bit of karate, he cannot match his school bully, Cheng. Dre befriends a maintenance man named Mr. Han, who is also a master of martial arts. Mr. Han teaches Dre martial arts to hopefully best Cheng and maybe catch the attention of his crush Mei Ying. This movie is dramatic, action packed and hilarious, definitely great for many ages.
- Finding Nemo
Finding Nemo won the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature for Pixar. This movie is centered around a clownfish father, named Marlin who is looking for his missing son, Nemo. Marlin enlists the help of a forgetful, blue reef fish named Dory to track down Nemo. Marlin and Dory encounter many dangerous sea creatures, including jellyfish and sharks, while Nemo tries to escape a dentist’s aquarium. This movie did tremendously well among many demographics and is a great movie to watch during family movie nights.
- Home Alone
This Christmas classic features a young boy named Kevin McAllister being forgotten at home when his family goes on vacation. At first, he gets up to typical younger kid shenanigans, like jumping on the bed, eating too much junk food and watching R – rated movies, however his home is then threatened by the burglars Harry and Marv. He takes action to defend his home, coming up with clever ideas to scare the robbers, creating comedy and drama. This is definitely a perfect holiday movie to watch with the whole family.
- Despicable Me
Despicable Me is about a supervillain named Gru, who is trying to be the best supervillain, aided by his minions and scientist Dr. Nefario. He decides to steal the moon, making him go down in history, however another supervillain named Vector has the shrink ray necessary, so he adopts three girls to sell girl scout cookies to help him gain access to Vector’s house. This movie is complete comedy mixed with action, as the girls try to adjust to living with cold Gru, the minions try to help and Gru tries to steal the moon. Despicable Me will have many ages laughing, and enjoying the movie.
